Bagan was King Anawratha's capital when he united Burma under Theravadan Buddhism in the 9thC. After sacking by the Mongols in 1287, Bagan crumbled to become a small village of a few thousand people. It is now the largest and most concentrated area of Buddhist temples in the world.
