Mrauk-u is 5 hours by boat up the Kaladan River. Its historical role as the centre of the last independent kingdom of the Rakhine people is marked by magnificent temples reminiscent of Borobudur. It is now a sprawling group of villages linked by old dirt roads. It is also the gateway to villages a further 2 hours up the Lay Myo river.
