Mandalay is a dusty city with low story buildings, very few with pretensions to the modernity of other Asian cities. It was the last capital before annexation by the British and became largely a British planned city. Sagaing is the large Buddhist hub of the city. Nearby, a rural idyllic island was the former capital, Ava.
